Buyer’s guide

How much does a website cost in the UK in 2026?

“How much will it cost?” is usually the first question a business owner asks about a new website, and the honest answer is that it depends. That is not very helpful on its own, so this guide explains what actually drives the price, what you should expect to pay for after launch and how to compare quotes fairly.

The main ways to get a website

Most small businesses choose one of three routes, and each has a very different cost profile.

  • Do it yourself with a website builder. Platforms such as Wix, Squarespace and Shopify charge a monthly or annual subscription. The upfront cost is low, but your time is not free, and the result depends on your design and writing skills.
  • A freelancer. A good freelancer can be excellent value for a well-defined project. Check their portfolio, their availability for support after launch and what happens if they are unavailable.
  • An agency. You typically pay more than you would for a single freelancer, but you get a defined process, broader skills such as design, development, copy and SEO, and continuity of support.

None of these is automatically right or wrong. The best choice depends on how important the website is to winning work, how much time you have and how complex your needs are.

What drives the price of a website

Number of pages and amount of content

A focused single-page website costs less than a site with separate pages for each service, location and case study. More pages mean more design, more writing and more testing.

Bespoke design or a template

A template is quicker and cheaper but can look similar to many other websites. A bespoke design is built around your brand, your customers and your goals, and takes more time to get right.

Who writes the words

Content is often the part that delays projects. If you supply finished text and photos, the price is lower. If you need help with copywriting, structure or photography, budget for it.

Features and integrations

Booking systems, online shops, member areas, calculators, custom forms and connections to your CRM or accounting software all add development and testing time. Ecommerce in particular brings product setup, payments, delivery rules and legal pages.

Search foundations, speed and accessibility

A website should load quickly, work well on mobile, be usable by as many people as possible and give search engines clear page titles and structure. Some quotes include this as standard; others treat it as an extra. Ask. You can see what is included in our small business website packages.

Ongoing costs to budget for

The build is only part of the cost. Make sure you know who pays for each of these, and how much:

  • Domain name renewal, usually yearly
  • Hosting, from basic shared hosting to managed platforms
  • Business email, often charged per mailbox
  • Platform or plugin subscriptions, including website builder plans, themes, booking tools and premium plugins
  • Maintenance and security updates, especially for platforms such as WordPress
  • Content changes after launch, whether you make them or pay someone else to
  • Marketing, such as SEO or advertising, if you want the website to bring in new customers

What our own websites cost

We publish our starting prices so you know where you stand. Our Essential package, a bespoke single-page website with a responsive desktop and mobile layout, starts from £1,000. Our Business package, a tailored multi-page website, starts from £2,500. Projects with more complex journeys, functionality or integrations are quoted individually. Final project pricing is agreed before work begins. You can see what each package includes in our website design packages comparison.

If you want help being found once the website is live, our SEO packages for small businesses cost £500 per month alongside a Web Builder Agency website build, or £750 per month as a standalone service.

How to compare quotes fairly

Two quotes for “a website” can describe very different things. Before you compare prices, make sure you are comparing like with like. Ask each supplier:

  1. How many pages are included, and who writes the content?
  2. Is the design bespoke or based on a template?
  3. How many rounds of changes are included?
  4. Are mobile layouts, basic search setup and speed optimisation included?
  5. Who owns the website, the design files and the domain once it is paid for?
  6. What are the ongoing costs for hosting, maintenance and support?
  7. What happens if you want to move the website elsewhere later?
  8. How are payments staged, and what happens if the project is delayed?

Ask to see live websites they have built, not just screenshots, and look at them on your phone.

Cheap versus good value

A low price is only good value if the website does its job. A website that looks dated, is hard to use on a phone or never appears in search can cost far more in lost enquiries than it saved upfront. Equally, you do not need every feature on day one. A clear, well-built website that explains what you do and makes it easy to get in touch is a strong starting point that you can build on.
